Severide - Summer 2019

About Us

We are a small herd of registered Alpines and a couple of token misfits.

Three unregistered goats are how it started. They began our journey into a more serious and registered herd. Vera, our Mini Saanen, was born in May 2016 and was the first doe to have kids and be milked at the farm. She learned to be milked while we learned to milk - let me just say, this is not recommended at all! It was terribly frustrating for both human and goat. Thankfully, it all worked out very well and Vera is now consistently the easiest doe to milk by hand or machine!
Vera gave us Severide in her first kidding, our mostly Saanen buck. He is an absolute goof ball and a love bug. Even though he is mixed, he throws very Saanen kids who are quite thick in body.
Trouble, our Lamancha/Alpine doe was the only horned doe on our farm. (This is not recommended.) She was named at only a day old and the name has fit her perfectly over the years. She isn't mean, just the first to get into trouble and tell you about it. Trouble now lives in Vermont with a dear friend.

Our registered herd of Alpines came to us from a good friend in northern Vermont at Four Meadows Farm. Needing to devote his time to other very important parts of life, he offered his entire herd to us. We hope to continue to improve this herd and definitely enjoy all of them very much.
The herd consisted of eleven does and four bucks with some wonderful lines. We started participating in ADGA's Performance Programs in 2020 and hope to get everyone the stars and scores they deserve! We are excited to have recorded all the wonderful qualities we know they have and to get insight into anything that needs improvement.

We moved to Pennsylvania...

In September of 2021 we picked up everything and moved south to Altoona Pennsylvania. We often get asked, Why? Eric's work in the fly fishing industry means that he needs to fish to test out fly patterns and build durability among many other things. Altoona is not very far at all from world class fishing around Spruce Creek. If you're like me and don't know much about it I'll leave you with this - Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club has been visited many times by President Carter. THAT'S how good the fishing is around here.

Xirena

zah-ree-nah

Xirena is our Kangal livestock guardian. She is charged with protecting the goat herd from all threats be they human or animal. She is still just a puppy but already shows how fierce she can be. Right now she's more concerned by the deer and the fox but over time she will learn that they aren't as much of a threat as some other things.
Since moving to Altoona in September 2021, Xirena has begun to take her guarding duties very seriously. She has very quickly learned what is and isn't normal for the neighborhood and developed a "get away" bark and a "I need backup" bark. The change in her has been tremendous and truly incredible to witness! We couldn't be more proud of her!

The property is posted appropriately for a working LGD on the premises. Trespass at your own risk. (As in: Don't.)

Sharp Cat is a beautiful Thoroughbred mare who used to race. She decided that she didn't much like being in the starting gate and was retired from racing. She is a very sensitive mare and everything MUST be her idea. She is such fun to work with and learn to unlock. Cat is boarded nearby where there is access to trails, arenas, cross country courses and more grass than she could possibly dream about eating.
